What causes ovarian cysts?

i had one when i was 13 and it ruptured… it was the most painful experience of my life. What causes them to form, how can i prevent them from forming, and is it possible that it’s popping damaged one of my ovaries?
and also what makes them pop?

hormonal changes pop them up, basically to definate cause for them. it can damage ovary in long term
