What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?

My monthly cycle ended two days ago and all seemed fine yesterday. Then today I am noticing a dull pain on my right side. I called my doctor’s office and they think I might have ovarian cysts. How do I know? Also, the nurse asked if my last child was delivered by c-section. Why is that important? How do I know if I should get this checked or wait?
One day later, and pain is worse, but still comes and goes. Feeling pressure in pelvic area, kinda bloated.

If you have pain in your ovary area, you might have an ovarian cyst. I have experienced that same type of pain whenever I have had an ovarian cyst. I was also diagnosed with endometriosis in 2007 which caused me severe pelvic pain and intense and painful period cramping.

Some functional ovarian cysts have no symptoms and are discovered, if at all, during routine pelvic exams. Others can cause symptoms, including changes in the menstrual cycle, including shorter or longer periods, skipped periods, and/or spotting between periods, pelvic pain or ache, especially during sexual intercourse or at the start or finish of menstruation, feelings of nausea or queasiness or breast tenderness.

I think that the reason the nurse may have asked whether your last child was delivered by c-section could be because of possible scar tissue as scar tissue could also cause a dull pain in your pelvis.

I would however recommend that if you have any concerns regarding this pain you are experiencing, that you consult with your doctor/gyno for further evaluation. Sometimes ovarian cysts can become large and can twist or rupture causing intense pain and sometimes turning into an emergency.

    Good luck :)

Just wait, they can’t do anything about a cyst anyway. It should hurt like heck soon then it will rupture. Then you’ll be fine.

When an ovarian cyst gets to a more advanced stage, there will be shooting pains in which ever side it’s on (in your case the right). It can get so bad as to double you over and cause you to be physically ill.

I had a dermoid cyst on my right ovary back in August. The pain was excruciating. They did an emergency surgey at about 11:30 P.M. to remove the whole ovary. I was not aware of its growth, therefore it became very large. The doctor said it was bigger than a softball, but smaller than a football.

In your case, if it is just a fluid filled cyst, it will probably go away on its own. If the pain continually gets worse, see your doctor, and they will likely suggest birth control to get rid of it. However, if it’s like mine, it will need to be surgically removed.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

Unless symptoms are present, ovarian cysts are typically diagnosed during an annual pelvic examination. Other diagnostic tests such as ultrasound and laparoscopy, may be utilized if your physician detects any abnormalities.

    Here’s some helpful facts…
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs which are similar to blisters. Ovarian cysts are common among women during their reproductive years and are growths that form on the two almond sized organs on each side of the uterus. Most types of ovarian cysts are harmless and go away without any treatment.
Ovarian cysts often cause no symptoms; however when symptoms are present, ovarian cysts may cause a dull ache or a sense of fullness or pressure in the abdomen. Pain during intercourse and at other times can also indicate the presence of ovarian cysts.

Pain or pressure is caused by a number of factors such as size, bleeding or bursting of a cyst which irritates the abdominal tissues, or torsion (twisting of a cyst) which can block the flow of blood to the cyst.

Other symptoms of ovarian cysts which might occur include delayed, irregular, or unusually painful periods. If you experience distention of your abdomen or any other symptoms, notify your Doctor immediately.

Your Doctor may have asked you about c-section delivery because this, although rare, can cause ovarian cramping afterwards.

Good Luck to you..hope you feel better soon :)

hello! I was in your boat last year. I had an ovarian cyst that was approx. 2cm, which is fairly large… it ruptured and i had one dime size drop of blood on the toilet paper from it, and then continual pain into the next day… similar to period cramps but you know its not cramps… Many many women have ovarian cysts, most dont even know of them- they appear- they rupture and then they are gone… sometimes they cause people problems and they need to be removed (depending on the size) thats why if they are found, if you have a decent doctor they will tell you that it needs to be monitored for growth. If it grows to large it might have to be surgically removed. you will need to have an ultrasound to detect them… its not abnormal to have a cyst, like i said they come and go…
