Should I have surgery to remove ovarian cysts?
I have a 5.5-cm dermoid hemorrhagic cyst on each ovary, and they haven’t improved in the last 9 months, when they were first detected on ultrasound.
Should I have the surgery to remove them? I don’t want to screw up my future fertility in any way.
Can an ovarian cyst cause any damage?
Around June-August of this year, I went to the hospital to some really bad abdominal pains. At first my mom thought they were something to do with the gall bladder or kidneys (And it couldn’t have been my appendix because I had an appendectomy when I was six) so she took me to the hospital.
When they gave us our results, they said it was there was a cyst on my right ovary. At first, they made it seem so innocent, but when I went to several other doctors they said that there are two types of cysts. A hemorrhage cyst which probably developed from my last period which is more tricky (They explained that if it gives me pain, it could twist the ovary and cut off my blood supply, reducing my chances of living) and the original kind that just stays attached to me and doesn’t do too much damage.
When I went back to the hospital, they explained it’s very important that whenever I get the pain, is to rush to the hospital. Then another time they said it wasn’t too important and just to give me Tylenol if the pain began as if it was nothing. Tomorrow, I’m going back for another MRI to see how the cyst is doing. My period is coming up in a few days (or hours) and I’m wondering if an ovarian cyst in my case is dangerous or nothing to worry about.
Just for some back info, I discovered this around late july to early august and it’s now going to december. I’m a 14 year old girl and i’m about 109 lbs. The only person who ever had this same condition in my family was my aunt to my mom’s side.
starry eyes- thnx for the information. I actually have been to the gynecologist twice.
They actually said a mix of what the doctor and hospital told me. When i went there, the doctor tried to break my hymen so they could "feel" the cyst. Very tramatizing for me xP but they did give some good advice and the doctor was very helpful…and so was your answer ![]()
Question about ovarian cysts/cancer?
I went to my ob/gyn back in June mainly due to pelvic pain I was having generally on my left side. It had also been 2 years since my last pap. My doctor did a pelvic exam and a pap and after asking me a series of questions about my symptoms told me that I probably had a cyst on my ovary. She did not order an ultrasound though. She put me on birth control pills and told me if it did not help to call her back. Well about a week later I got a phone call that my pap was abnormal (ASCUS positive for low risk HPV) so I went back in for a colposcopy. The results of the colposcopy were CIN 1. I go back in November for a re-colpo. However, I am still having pain on my left side. It will go away for a couple of weeks and then come right back. The most painful time is during my period. I called my doctor and told him and he said to try one more pack of birth control pills and if it didn’t help they would schedule more tests. My mom and my sister both have endometriosis. My mom had to have a complete hysterectomy when she was 22 due to her endometriosis. I am 25. I have been doing a lot of research and found out that your sigmoid colon runs very near your left ovary. So I thought maybe it could be diverticulosis. So I took some mild stool softners (that were not oh so mild!). I had major diarrhea that whole day (sorry if TMI). This made my left side hurt even more. Could it possibly be because when you have diarrhea it causes your colon to spasm and it rubbed against my cyst causing irritation? Also I had a c-section Jan 2008. Could I have developed adhesions causing my left side pain? Basically the only symptoms that I am having is left side pelvic pain (comes and goes.. sometimes it will hurt for 2 weeks sometimes it won’t hurt at all for 2 weeks) and mild lower back pain (not sure if the lower back pain is from PMS or the cyst). I do not have any pain during sex, frequent urination, full feeling.. etc. Should I be concerned about ovarian cancer? I’m just ready to get the ball rolling and get an ultrasound. Should the doctor have ordered one first of all in the first place? I was just wanting some personal opinions and maybe some people that experienced similar things. Thank you!

Ovarian cyst caused by hormones?
I just recently found out that I have a cyst on my left ovary that is about the size of the ovary. The ER doc said that it’s due to my hormones being way out of whack. I have an appointment on wednesday to see my OB. But if that’s the case, could that be the reason why I’m overweight? I eat 1500-2000 calories a day, drink 100oz of water a day and I bike 20 miles every day.
